HILLSBOROUGH, NJ – Sophomores at Hillsborough High School will be exposed to the harsh realities of life as a drug addict and gang member during an assembly at the school Jan. 31, presented by Michael DeLeon, founder of Steered Straight.

Parents are invited to attend the substance abuse and addiction program later that day in the high school auditorium, with a second presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Children over 12 years old are also invited.

DeLeon says he is on a mission to educate youth on making the right decisions when it comes to serious life issues, especially drugs.

He is the founder and powerhouse behind Steered Straight Inc., a non- profit organization formed in 2000 designed to carry an important message to youth on the extreme dangers of drugs, gang involvement and associated criminal activity.

He speaks from experience and has first-hand knowledge on a life of crime and drug addiciton, an ex-offender who after nearly 8 years of drug addiction and gang involvement, spent 12 years in state prison and half-way houses for a gang-related homicide.

Since his release from prison, he has earned 3 Associates Degrees, a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Management, with a minor in Criminal Justice and a CADC Educational Certificate.

By opening up regarding his past, DeLeon hopes that he will steer today’s youth away from drug use and poor decisions. He also hopes to provide parents and community members with information regarding current drug and alcohol trends in our community as well as how to engage children and young adults in constructive conversation regarding these difficult topics.

He leads a team of talented speakers who travel nationwide to present a realistic and powerful prevention message.  His “no holds back” message resonates well with student assemblies, faculty and parents. He and his team have traveled to 47 states.

Stay In Your Lane Media, the media arm of Steered Straight, was founded by DeLeon in 2012, and has produced four award winning documentaries: "Kids Are Dying," "An American Epidemic," "Marijuana X" and "Road to Recovery." His fifth documentary, “Higher Power" is currently in post-production.

He has also produced multiple public service announcements, as well as educational and instructional videos on prevention and recovery

Steered Straight is being presented by the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Safe Coalition of Hunterdon and Somerset, Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance, Hillsborough Life Skills, and Steered Straight.
