Jumper Owner, E. Hunter Harrison Passes Away After Brief Illness

E. Hunter Harrison, horse owner and breeder died on Dec. 16, 2017. He was 73.

Harrison was president and CEO of CSX Corporation, a Jackonville, Fla. Based railroad company. "It is with great sadness that we announce that E. Hunter Harrison, president and chief executive officer of CSX, died today in Wellington, Florida, due to unexpectedly severe complications from a recent illness. The entire CSX family mourns this loss. On behalf of our board of directors, management team and employees, we extend our deepest sympathies to Hunter's family. Hunter was a larger-than-life figure who brought his remarkable passion, experience and energy in railroading to CSX," the company said in a statement.

Harrison was a staunch supporter of equestrian sports, particularly show jumping. He owned Double H Farm in Florida and Connecticut. He has had a long and successful partnership McLain Ward. Horses such HH Azur, Sapphire, HH Carlos Z, HH Rebozo, HH Rufus, Night Train and others that were owned, or partly owned by Double H Farm were highly successful in the show jumping arena with Ward in the saddle.

"Today we lost one of equestrian sport's greats," said US Equestrian President, Murray Kessler in a statement released by the USEF. "An iconic and beloved horse owner and patron of the sport, Hunter Harrison will be greatly missed for his enthusiasm, generosity, and dedication to his horses, equestrian sport, and most importantly, his family. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, the team at Double H Farm and all who had the chance to know him."

"My family and I are very sad that we have lost a huge presence in our lives," said Ward. "Hunter was not only a wonderful supporter of my career, but also a guiding force in everything we did. I will miss him dearly, and my thoughts are with his family in this difficult time."
