Kids Can Race Their Bicycles at the Memorial Day Tour of Somerville

SOMERVILLE - There's still time for boys and girls ages three through 12 to sign up to race their bicycles on Main Street as part of this year’s 73rd annual Tour of Somerville on Memorial Day, May 30.

Scheduled to be held around 1:30 pm, prior to the 25-mile women’s race, the kids’ straight line sprints event will be run down Main Street at distances of 15-200 yards, with cyclists grouped by age. Somerset Patriots mascot “Sparkee” will be on hand to awarded ribbons to all participants finishing in front of the Somerset County Courthouse.

Children should be accompanied by a parent and must wear a proper fitting bicycle helmet.

Participants must pre-register by going on the Tour of Somerville website, www.tourofsomerville.org, and follow prompts to the Kids’ Sprints registration section.

The event will be held for the first time as part of the Tour of Somerville’s main race program.

Later in the afternoon, the young riders will give way to some of the best elite cyclists in the country who will compete in the 50-mile “Kugler-Anderson Memorial” feature event, the oldest major bicycle race in the country.
