EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Middlesex County Fair ended its annual summer run at the Cranbury Road fair grounds in East Brunswick on Sunday. It was a busy week at the fair, which opened on August 3 and concluded on August 9. With warm temperatures and a rain-free week, fair-goers enjoyed rides, amusements, 4-H displays, animals, food and entertainment.

Sunday's sunny weather brought a steady stream of visitors who passed up a perfect beach day to savor the last day of the fair. Parking spaces filled up as quickly as they emptied as people exited and entered the busy fair grounds.

Short lines formed at the always popular amusement rides as parents placed little ones on and off of the motorcylcles, cars and other favorites. Children relished in their mirrored reflections in the Fun House and giggled as their parents slipped down behind them on the slides.

After taking delight in the rides, most people wandered off to take in the 4-H displays of vegetables, fruits, art exhibits, and animals. Youngsters particularily appreciated getting the opportunity to pet the soft, furry rabbits volunteers held at a nearby table with many begging parents to adopt the bunnies that sat in their cages with adoption signs taped to the top.

Despite the seven dollar fee, the pony rides were another popular attraction with a continuous parade of enthusiastic riders waiting for their turn to climb into the saddle for a short turn around the pen as smiling parents snapped photographs.

Large crowds cheered on the pig races and watched a wrestling match while many others took in some exhibition dancing as they sought a brief resite from the sunshine under a tent.

As the last lemonades and cotton candies were sold, another sign of the upcoming school year rose on the horizon. Another annual summer tradition had come to an end. The Middlesex County Fair was over; always a bittersweet moment when the rides close down and the tables are folded up until next year.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
