SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Hopes were high for the Spotswood High School varsity baseball team as the fifth seed in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. However, twelfth seeded Old Bridge High School scored the upset, knocking the Chargers out of the tournament in the first round with a 4-2 victory on Monday, May 15.
The Knights Jake Kodros pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking four to nail down the win on the mound. Kodros was also two-for-four at the plate, driving in one RBI. Rob Laconti was two-for-four as well with two doubles and two RBIs for Old Bridge.
JT Vento had one RBI for the Chargers. Vento along with Ryan Szatkowski and Nick Mohr had hits for Spotswood. Andrew Fuzesi scored both runs for the Chargers. Matt Ciaccio took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Chris Auciello pitched the last two innings for Spotswood.
The two teams were knotted at one run apiece until the fifth inning when the Knights scored three runs to take the lead. Spotswood scored their second run of the game in the seventh.
Old Bridge will move on in the tournament to face fourth seeded South Plainfield High School. The loss to Old Bridge was only the fourth of the season for the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division champion Chargers. Seedings will be announced for the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two Tournament on Thursday, May 18. The Chargers will travel to Dunellen on May 18 to face Dunellen High School in a regular season match up.
