OZONE PARK, N.Y.— Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners — including Significant Form in the $100,000 Memories of Silver Stakes—to lock up the riding title as Aqueduct's Spring Meeting concluded on April 22.
Trainer Chad Brown trained Significant Form and thereby clinched the training title.
Wealth Effect, racing for Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stable's finished second to Significant Form. But, that's OK because the perennial leading owner already had enough wins to take home another leading owner's trophy.
The 25-year-old Ortiz, the NYRA's 2017 Riding Champion, won the fourth race on the card with Son of Mine and the fifth with Major League to tally 24 wins and over $1.2 million in purse earnings and record his 12-th riding title on the NYRA circuit. Manny Franco, the leading rider at the Big A's Winter Meeting, finished second with 17 races won, six more than Junior Alvarado.
Brown, a 39-year-old native of Mechanicville, N.Y. who won racing's Eclipse Award for trainers in 2016 and 2017, sent out 39 starters at Big A Spring and came back with 15 winners. The trophy is his 11th for an NYRA individual meeting. Linda Rice took second with 11 wins, two more than Rudy Rodriguez.
Klarman went to the winners' circle six times from 11 starts. He would have made it seven in the Memories of Silver except the Ortiz-Brown team went to the front with Significant Form before the sound of the bell died down. The 3 to 2 favorite stayed there to win by 6-1/4 lengths over Wealth Effect, the longest shot in the field of six 3-year-old fillies at 20 to 1.
Significant Form ran a mile and a sixteenth on the outer turf course in 1:40.85 to earn $60,000 for owner Stephanie Seymour Brant. The daughter of Creative Cause was bred in Kentucky by former Governor Brereton C. Jones.
