Rockabilly Legend Rudy "Tutti" Grayzell and All His Travels (including with Elvis)

Rudy's Let's Get Wild Finale (watch the little kid at the end...that tyke will grow up to be a rock star!)
Rudy Rocks!
The French really like Rudy. Well...who doesn't. He's fun!
I know that this looks like Jersey. And this fan definitely looks "Jersey". Believe it or not, that diner is in France.
Why is Charlie Gracie feeding pudding Rudy? We know that only makes him hyper.
Robert Gordon, Charlie Gracie, and Rudy hamming it up with a six grade "Flat Stanley" doll. That had to make six grader's mother really excited.
Let' Get Wild!
So, Rudy says he's Rudy Grayzell. The less than amused cop says, "Than I bet this is Elvis". Elvis replied, "Yes. Yes. I am".

The irony hasn't been lost on him that of all the places Rudy "Tutti" Grayzell has played in the world he remains perhaps most popular in one of the few he hasn't.

The Facebook messages stream in and the royalty checks arrive every month but it's not for lack of wanting that Grayzell has never taken his rockabilly sound to the Far East.

He's still hoping, he says, to find a booking agent there. And the way he sees it, there's still plenty of time. After all, he's only 83.
The man who influenced the music of everyone from Elvis Presley to the Rolling Stones is a household name in the American south, a regular throughout Europe and would have appeared this past winter in Argentina and Brazil were those shows not cancelled because of economic collapse and political upheaval.

This year, he'll spend four months on the road, cranking out almost all his own material, including, of course, his classic Duck Tail.
"I don't know where I get the energy from," he drawls over the phone from his home in Texas. "To me it's not work ... I love it. I love the music but mostly I love the people. That's what it's all about."

And while he's an American icon, he continues to draw crowds in Spain, Germany and -- his favorite -- England.
"Some of them know the words to my songs better than I do," he jokes.

But the one place he won't be this year is Blue Monday, giving the annual festival in France later this weekend a miss for one of the few times in the event's history.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
