NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Big Ten recognized 137 Rutgers student-athletes as Spring 2018 Academic All-Conference honorees, announced by the league office on Wednesday. All 10 eligible Rutgers programs are represented on the list, which includes 79 repeat selections and a trio of four-time honorees in men's lacrosse redshirt senior and All-American Christian Mazzone, women's lacrosse redshirt senior Nicole Kopyta, and baseball redshirt senior Chris Folinusz.

"As the Scarlet Knights continue to pursue excellence in all aspects of being a student-athlete, we are proud their diligent work in the classroom is being recognized at record numbers," said Director of Athletics Patrick Hobbs. "In addition to our young men and women's accomplishments, these distinctions are a resounding testament to the support system we have built at Rutgers, and a credit to our dedicated academic advisers, learning specialists and faculty athletic representatives."

The 137 Spring selections from RU are a school record since joining the Big Ten for the 2014-15 season, surpassing the 115 from the Spring of 2017. Joining the 33 Winter and 78 Fall honorees, Rutgers boasts a program-record total of 248 for the 2017-18 academic year.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of May 1 for spring sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Michael Rexrode of men's lacrosse joined his teammate, Mazzone, as Rutgers' two spring student-athletes who earned both Big Ten All-Conference and Academic All-Big Ten in the same season. A total of 35 seniors completed the clean sweep, earning the distinction in all years in which they were eligible.

Earlier this month, a school-record eight Rutgers programs - baseball, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf and women's lacrosse – earned public recognition from the NCAA for their multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The average multiyear APR rate for Rutgers athletic programs increased to 991, eight points above the NCAA average rate of 983. Thirteen teams either tied or set program multiyear APR rates records.

The Rutgers Leadership Academy and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee were again well represented as 17 SAAC members made Academic All-Big Ten this Spring, including Milo Freeman and Kyle Walker from baseball, Owen Mead and Casey Rose from men's lacrosse, Jack Panagos from men's golf, Trent Brinkofski and Dimitri Demos from men's track and field, Tatum Jackson and Emily Mills from women's golf, Alana Navaroli from women's lacrosse, Erin Ender and Sarah Johanek from rowing, Chloe Lee and Kyra Yap from women's tennis, Rhonda Rogombe and Jenna Sobieski from women's track and field, and Sierra Maddox from softball.
