NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Rutgers police issued an alert after a man was mugged and beaten by a group of men early Friday morning.

The victim, who was described as being affiliated with the university, was walking on Senior Street between Sicard and Wyckoff streets about 2 a.m. when a male approached and grabbed an item of value from him, university police said.

The victim chased the thief and confronted him, and a struggle ensued. At that point other men came to assist the thief and beat the victim, police said.

The perpetrators fled down Senior Street towards Wyckoff Street, according to authorities, who said the victim suffered minor injuries and declined medical attention.

The initial perpetrator is described as a black male, wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and white Adidas sneakers with slicked back brown-colored hair.
