SHORT HILLS, NJ - A loss prevention officer at Sak’s Fifth Avenue contacted Millburn police Sunday evening after a struggle broke out with a suspected shoplifter.  Millburn police received the call at 5:53 p.m. and immediately put out a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for a man described as a young white male, stocky build, wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.

The loss prevention officer tells Millburn police that the suspect is seen in the vicinity of 233 Canoe Brook Rd. and then entering a wooded area inside the Canoe Brook Country Club.  Shortly after hearing the BOLO, Summit police officer Jeff Deets noticed a Dodge Caravan parked on the shoulder of Route 24 East with its hazard lights flashing.  As he was approaching the vehicle, he saw a man jumping into the vehicle.  The vehicle then immediately sped off.

Officer Deets pursued the minivan and stopped it shortly after.  He approached the vehicle with three men inside and noticed merchandise similar to what Sak’s had described as been stolen.  Officer Deets immediately contacted Millburn police and officers Sergei Zonn and Sergeant Joe Leone arrived at the scene shortly after the notification.

Police arrested the suspects and charged both men with conspiracy and shoplifting.  The third man in the vehicle was not charged.  The suspects were from Brooklyn, NY and the vehicle had New York license plates.

At the Millburn Police station, Lieutenant Ronald Guensch told TAP how well local law enforcement cooperates with one another in cross-jurisdictional territories, as in the case with Summit and Millburn.

“We have a great relationship with many police departments in the area”, said Guensch.  “We’ve worked together in many situations and help each other out.”

The Dodge minivan was the suspected get-away car.  Apparently the hazard lights were flashing so that the robber could quickly identify where the vehicle was parked.  The two charged suspects were arrested in Millburn.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
