SPOTSWOOD, NJ - School opened in the Spotswood School District on Thursday, September 7. For many at the Schoenly School, it was the first day of any formal schooling. There were a few tears as well as lots and lots of photographs as moms and dads snapped those milestone pictures as Schoenly students went off to their first day of preschool, kindergarten and first grade.

On the second day, there were still sniffles. However, there wasn't anything but smiles and laughter at the evening's Ice Cream Social. The social is hosted by the Spotswood PTA with the goal of letting kids, parents and teachers get to know one another outside of the classroom setting.

The event was well-attended with children and their families enjoying ice cream and drinks along with a little fun with classmates past and present.

Newly-appointed Schoenly School principal, Jennifer Asprocolas was on hand to chat with her students and their parents. Many of her staff including Jacyln Cassidy, Dawn Hyland, Carol Kuhn and Stacey Vespoli spent time getting to know their new students in addition to dishing out hugs to past students.

Memorial Middle School teacher Kristen Carpenter was there along with members of the National Junior Honor Society. Carpenter and her crew of Memorial students helped run activities such as a coloring center and a bit of hula hoop fun.

The event lasted an hour with many kids enjoying a spirited game of tag in between spoonfuls of ice cream.

The Appleby Elementary School will hold its Ice Cream Social on Friday, September 15 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room.

Back-to-School Bingo will be held on Friday, September 22 in the Memorial Middle School Cafeteria at 6:30 p.m.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
