SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Spotswood High School senior Vincent Maldonado was named the school's September Student of the Month. Maldonado hails from Spotswood and is a member of the Class of 2021. He will be inducted into the National Honor Society on Thursday, January 21. The teen is a member of SHS's Environmental Club as well as the TV and Radio Club. He is also a part of the Chargers' golf team. Maldonado earned a Junior Varsity golf award for his sophomore season. Since the golf season was canceled last spring, he didn't get the opportunity to play junior year. Maldonado will get one more opportunity to play for the Chargers. Practices begin for the golf team on April 1 with meets starting on April 9.
Maldonado's favorite class at Spotswood High School is Media Ethics. He does not have one favorite teacher.
"I appreciate all my teachers the same," Maldonado said.
While he has many favorite moments during his time as a Charger, his top is during Spirit Week junior year when he dressed as a banana. When he graduates this June, what Maldonado will miss most is his friends.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic changed the landscape of high school for Maldonado and his classmates last March when school abruptly went all-virtual. Despite the uncertainty, Maldonado remains positive.
"The pandemic has made this school year hard because the social aspect of the school year is virtually gone," Maldonado said. "But we need to have hope that things will get better because they will."
It's early in the decision-making process for college, but Maldonado knows exactly what he plans on studying once he makes his final decision on the university he will attend in the fall. Maldonado plans on becoming a veterinarian.
