Silence of Leadership

Some are quizzically wondering: What have the busy little bees been up to?

I haven’t written much. Not because I didn’t want to. Door knocking to meet the people of District 17 can be a time consuming and arduous task.  As any parent can relate, we’d do just about anything for our children, even walk until your feet are sore …and then keep walking.

I suppose one of the more common questions is why I decided to run.  Like many Americans, I didn’t feel that our representatives in office truly related to the plight of the common person as of late. This was no more evident than when I asked “What is the effect of Common Core/PARCC on our vulnerable children?” to our lawmakers several years ago. The question was met with the leadership of silence.  It’s still not clear to me if the silence meant “I don’t care what happens to them”. Perhaps it is easier for our lawmakers to pretend the question was never asked.

You’d like me to act like a politician now and tell you what I’m offering. Let’s be realistic: This is a Gerrymandered district and even should I win, I will be one vote in our State Assembly. It is more meaningful to you, as voters, to tell you what I stand for then offer you a new red bike and pretend you don’t need to pay for it.

New Jersey doesn’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. The ineffective and inefficient use of our tax revenues has led to our state’s dire straits. It is the tradition of many a politician to offer a platter of benefits, without showing the costs. Our choice for Governor will be an important factor in shoring up the financial welfare of our state. An error in judgment by the voters may result in the next credit downgrade. Of course, all this depends on you showing up to the ballot box. I’m still confused by the public. Many of you say you treasure and value the sacrifices our military has made, but yet you don’t honor that sacrifice by showing up on election day?

“I won’t vote for a Democrat/Republican!”

I might, if the person is reasonable. It’s become less about parties, who have largely become nothing more than king maker over seats. Do we have true representatives in office, people who care? Yes, but you as a public must sort through who those are on election day.

“Loyalty!”, scowls a someone in a dark corner.

I’m loyal to the people of New Jersey. As for anyone else, I’m as loyal to you as you are to me.

Robert A. Quinn is a candidate for New Jersey State Assembly in Legislative District 17 (Franklin Twp, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Piscataway, Milltown)

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
