SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Three Mercer County women are in critical condition after a box truck landed on top of the vehicle they were riding in Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said the crash took place at 6:31 a.m. at the intersection of Stults Road and Herrod Boulevard when the 2016 Hyundai Elantra the three were passengers in, driving north on Herrod Boulevard, was hit by a westbound 2013 Freightliner box truck on Stults Road.

The impact pushed the Elantra into a culvert on the side of the road and the box truck came to rest on top of it, trapping the three passengers and driver in the car, police said.

The driver of the Elantra, a 23-year-old Union County woman and her three female passengers ages 17, 18, and 23, all from Mercer County, had to be removed from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life, police said.

Georges Garage and Towing responded within minutes of the call with two heavy duty wreckers to lift the box truck off the trapped passengers in the car.

The towing company worked with firefighters from Monmouth Junction, Monroe District #3, and Kendall Park Fire Departments to rescue the victims, police said.

The team had to stabilize the box truck, pull it off the vehicle, and use the Jaws of Life to free the trapped passengers.

Paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, South Brunswick EMS, Monroe EMS, Cranbury EMS, and New Jersey State Police medevac treated and transported the injured to the hospital.

All were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, police said.

The three Elantra passengers in the vehicle were listed in critical condition, and the driver is in stable condition, police said.

The truck driver, a 36-year-old man from Middlesex County was treated and released from an area hospital.

Police are withholding identification of those involved until family and relatives can be notified.

The crash closed parts of routes 130, 32, and 535 as well as Herrod Boulevard and Stults Lane until afternoon, police said.

South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating the crash, and anyone with information is asked to call Officer William Merkler or Sergeant Gary Holsten at (732) 329-4000 ext.7472.
