South River Spoils Spotswood's Season Opener With 34-7 Victory On The Gridiron

SPOTSWOOD, NJ - South River High School's Travis Thomas had a big day for the Rams on Saturday, September 9 as they defeated Spotswood High School, 34-7, in the 2017 season opener. Thomas scored four touchdowns, including an 80-yard punt return in the third quarter.

Trenton Balitsky started the Rams' scoring in the first quarter, catching a 23-yard pass from South River quarterback, Michael DeSantis. DeSantis then connected with Thomas on three touchdown passes to effectively put the game out of the Chargers' reach.

Spotswood got their only score of the game in the second quarter. Shea Obado notched six points for the Chargers on a 27-yard run.

Spotswood was down 21-7 by halftime. Two additional Thomas touchdowns in the third quarter sealed the win for the Rams. A goal-line interception by Thomas was icing on the cake for the senior's banner day.

Spotswood will face Holmdel High School on Saturday, September 16. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at the Spotswood High School Stadium.

Holmdel is 1-1 on the season, defeating Brearley in their season opener, 17-12 before losing 14-3 to Monmouth Regional High School yesterday.
