SPOTSWOOD, NJ The Spotswood Recreation Department is calling all runners to register for the annual Spotswood 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. Both races will be held on September 12. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. on race day. Registered runners can pick up their packets including their bibs on race day starting at 7:30 a.m.

The Spotswood 5K is a popular race, so registering ahead of time via the online registration site or the printable form is highly recommended especially if you want to secure a T-shirt commemorating the event. However, same day registrations are also welcome and the Spotswood Recreation Department will have tables available to get runners registered beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Participants will be treated to a pleasant and relatively flat run through the streets of the scenic and historic borough of Spotswood, New Jersey. The town marked its 100-year anniversary in 2008.

Runners with strollers and or headphones are welcome as are wheelchairs. However, the Spotswood Recreation Department does ask that dogs do sit this race out.

Volunteers will be on hand to direct runners along the course and the path is also clearly marked with white arrows. Two water stations are set up along the route at the mile-one and mile-two markers.

Race day begins with the 1-Mile Fun Run where each participant receives a medal. The 5K follows shortly after the conclusion of the first race.

All the proceeds of the race go to benefit the Spotswood High School Softball and Golf Teams. Both teams are raising money to procure new equipment and uniforms.

Justin Huryk was the overall winner of the Spotswood 2014 5K with a time of 17:00.5.

Any businesses interested in sponsoring the 2015 Spotswood 5K can obtain the information via this link.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
