SPOTSWOOD, NJ - At the Spotswood Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 21, the Spotswood Board of Education named Dr. Anthony Vaz as the Interim Superintendent of Schools. Vaz will replace Dr. Scott Rocco on May 8. Rocco recently resigned his position as the Superintendent of Schools in the Spotswood School District at the February 7 meeting of the Spotswood Board of Education to become the Superintendent of Schools in the Hamilton Township School District. He began his tenure for the Spotswood school system on January 1, 2013, replacing Dr. Walter Uszenski. Rocco's last day in the district will be on May 5.

Vaz will officially step in as interim superintendent on May 8. The former principal and superintendent has a long history with the Spotswood School District, having previously served as the Superintendent of Schools for six years. Vaz retired as Spotswood's superintendent on June 6, 2006. Before becoming superintendent in 2000, Vaz worked in the Spotswood School District for 16 years, beginning his career as a principal. Vaz was the Director of Special Services prior to taking on the superintendent's position.

This isn't the first time that Vaz has been tapped as an interim superintendent for the Spotswood School District. After his retirement, Vaz returned to the district in August of 2012, serving as interim superintendent after Uszenski's resignation. Uszenski left the Spotswood School District to become the Superintendent of Schools in Brick Township. Vaz stepped down as interim superintendent when the district hired Rocco as the new superintendent.

"Dr. Vaz is well-known in our community and has more than demonstrated his expertise and his devotion to our community in the past," Spotswood Board of Education President Dulce Branco-Rivera said in a press release issued by the Spotswood School District. "He is an obvious choice to help us find our new superintendent and assist us in closing out the school year."
