SPOTSWOOD, NJ - After the Spotswood High School girls varsity basketball team defeated the school's chief rival, South River High School, it was the boys varsity's turn to take the court. They too came away with a victory, beating the Rams, 71-65. Matt Vento was the game's top scorer, netting 25 points for Spotswood. South River's Joseph Nigro scored 23 and grabbed eight rebounds.
Spotswood took a 31-25 lead into the halftime break. The team held a tight three-point lead after the third quarter. However, Spotswood would outscore South River 25-22 in the final eight minutes to nail down their seventh win of the season.
Abdullah Nieskens and Vinnie Guardiola both scored 12 points for Spotswood. Justin Dekovics added nine and Jack Welsh chipped in seven points.
Spotswood improved their overall season record to 7-5. They are 4-4 in division play and are fourth in the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division. Bishop Ahr High School leads the conference with a 6-0 division record.
Spotswood will take on Dunellen High School on Saturday, January 20. Tip off is at 1 p.m. Dunellen is also 7-5 on the season.
