MIDDLESEX, NJ - The Spotswood High School boys varsity tennis team lost their first match yesterday, 3-2 to Middlesex.
First singles player Jake Engstrom remained undefeated, beating Huy Troung, 6-0, 6-1. The senior is 3-0 in individual match play.
Second singles player Robby Nason won the first set quite handily over Danny Newton, 6-1. Newton battled back to take the second set 6-3. However, Nason rallied back strong to take the third set 6-3 for the win. Nason improved his individual match record on the young season to 2-1.
Third singles player Derek Miller lost a tough three set match to Cristhiam Lopez. The freshman won the first set, but Lopez came back to take the second and third sets for the win.
Dushyant Singh and John Tobia lost their first doubles match to Justin Dela-Cruz and Cole Santucci in straight sets. It was the first individual loss of the season for the doubles pair.
Stephen Gardner and Ryan Miller also dropped their second doubles match to Anthony Hernandan and Jose Silva-Fajardo.
The loss to Middlesex moved the Chargers overall record down to 2-1 for the season. Today's match against Iselin Kennedy was canceled due to wet court conditions. The Chargers will take on Metuchen at home tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
