SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Following last week's defeat at Middlesex under the lights, the Spotswood High School varsity football team bounced back with a big homecoming win over Metuchen High School on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers beat the Bulldogs 34-13 behind a strong performance by quarterback Tallen Smith. Smith threw for two touchdowns and crossed into the end zone for a score as well. Yamil Aquirre scored two TDs while Anthony Dove and George Hayford each added one.
Spotswood took a 21-7 lead into the halftime break and was leading 28-7 going into the final quarter of the game. The Chargers defense had a stellar afternoon too. Steven Melillo had two sacks while Wallly Akinsuyi and Max Swiderski each had one sack. Spotswood improves the team's overall record to 3-3 on the season and to 3-1 in the GMC Gold Division. The Chargers are second in the division behind undefeated Middlesex High School.
Spotswood rounds out the regular season on the road. Next week the Chargers travel to Dunellen High School to take on the Destroyers. Dunellen is 1-4 this season and lost their first game on Saturday to South River High School 26-0. The team's only win this season was against Highland Park High School. The Destroyers won last year's matchup with Spotswood 44-20 after the Chargers won four straight meetings between the two teams.
Saturday's homecoming win capped off a the Spotswood High School's annual Spirit Week. The high school held its traditional homecoming dance in the evening.
