SOUTH RIVER, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity tennis team finished the 2017 season with a 5-0 loss to South River High School. The loss leaves the Chargers winless on the 2017 tennis season with a 0-14 record. Four members of the team, including Devin Ryan, Isabella Santiago, Kaitlyn Dwyer and Ashley Murphy will graduate in June. The team had a large influx of young and inexperienced players this fall, making the season a learning one for many of the varsity and junior varsity players.

Mirit Girgis lost her first singles match to Kayelena Brimage in straight sets, (6-1, 6-3). Ryan dropped her final second singles varsity match to Nur Hassan in three sets. The senior won the first set, (6-4). However, Hassan battled back to take the match by winning the next two sets, (7-5, 10-8). Gabriela Zeron lost her third singles match in straight sets to Lycett Thiel, (6-2, 6-0). Alex Lemiere and Emily Michaels lost their first doubles match to the South River team of Edwards and Wang in straight sets, (7-6, 7-5).

The senior pairing of Dwyer and Murphy lost a tough three set second doubles match to the South River team of Florentino and Stewart. Dwyer and Murphy lost the first set, (6-4) before battling back to take the second set, (7-5). A third set tie-breaker served as the final set, which South River won, (10-4).
