MIDDLESEX, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity basketball team opened up 2017 with a 42-39 loss to Middlesex High School. Middlesex took a one-point advantage into the halftime break, leading 21-20. The difference-maker in the game was the final quarter, which saw the Blue Jays outscore the Chargers, 14-7, to nail down the victory.

Candace DiNizo and Carly Santucci both put up 16 points for Middlesex while Brooke Nelson grabbed 11 rebounds. Erin Malin was Spotswood's top scorer, netting 10 points. Paige Dadika scored nine points while Maddie Hellerich added eight.

The loss drops the Chargers' overall record to 3-4. Their conference record is 3-2. They will look to bounce back against Highland Park High School on Friday at the Spotswood High School gymnasium. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
