SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - Cassie Vega netted the game winning lay up with just one point seven seconds left on the clock to give South Brunswick High School a 48-46 preliminary round victory over Spotswood High School on Presidents' Day in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. Vega took a bounce pass from fellow senior Sydney Coleman for the game-winner despite being guarded by three Chargers. Coleman made the pass with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter. Coleman has 17 points for the Vikings while Vega scored 10. South Brunswick, the tournament's 14th seed, moves on to the first round to face second seeded Middlesex High School.

Maddie Hellerich and Julia Masucci both earned double-doubles for 18th seeded Spotswood. Hellerich had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Masucci scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Jessica Addesso was Spotswood's top scorer with 14 points. Allison Clarke added seven points and also had nine rebounds. Giana Oellers chipped in three points.

The loss to South Brunswick knocks the Chargers out of the county tournament. Spotswood's last regular season game against North Brunswick High School has been rescheduled to February 27 at 5:30 p.m. because the Chargers boys varsity team plays its preliminary round GMC game with Wardlaw-Hartridge tomorrow. The Chargers' play Rumson-Fair Haven on March 3 at 7 p.m. in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two Tournament.
