SPOTSWOOD, NJ - With 11 returning varsity players, the Spotswood High School boys varsity soccer team is eyeing a competitive season in the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division and a possible run to the championship. Spotswood brought home a Blue Division championship in 2016.
"With a strong nucleus of players returning, we hope to compete for a Blue Division title," said longtime Spotswood High School varsity soccer coach Jeff Marvinny. " We have a lot of experience. We return nine players who started games last season and another two who played a lot of minutes. Four returning players were members of the All-Blue Division team."
Goalkeeper Andrew Bishara, midfielder Luke Tharney, forward Yanni Hatzistefanis and forward Chris Moran made the All-Blue Division team for their stellar performances on the field last fall. They are joined by returning varsity teammates Brian Lumsden, Jon Wasserman, Steven Karczewski, Liam Barlow, Gabe Rosario, Jimmy Lentino and Timmy Smith.
The Chargers do have some holes to fill with the departure of varsity standouts Sean Duffy, Edozie Okafor, Jordan Church and Skylar Malone. Marvinny is confident a new crop of newcomers is ready to meet the challenge on the varsity field this season.
"The newcomers to the varsity team are blending in well and will provide us the ability to adjust tactically to other teams and styles of play," Marvinny said of the team's new additions.
Noteworthy newcomers to the Chargers this season include defenders Jason Schwartz, Andrew Dao and Miguel Chica as well as midfielders Sunny Goswami and Aiden Scher. Scher is the only freshman in the group.
Spotswood finished the 2018 season with a 7-9-3 overall record. The team was 6-3-1 in the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division. Spotswood had two early season scrimmages this week and has an upcoming one on Saturday against Nottingham High School in Trenton. The team plays two scrimmages next week in Edison.
Spotswood begins the 2019 boys varsity soccer season on Tuesday, September 3 at 4 p.m. at the Spotswood High School Varsity Soccer Field. The Chargers first opponent of the year is Middlesex High School.
