SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School football team earned their third Greater Blue Division Championship in 2016, finishing with a 6-4 overall record. They will look to grab their fourth division title in a row when the 2017 season opens on Saturday, September 9.

Prior to the season opener, the Chargers will test the waters with scrimmages against Perth Amboy High School, Newark Central High School, West Essex High School and Keansburg High School. Their final scrimmage will be against Keansburg at home on August 31 at 10 a.m.

Spotswood High School English teacher, Andy Cammarano will be behind the bench for his eleventh season as the Chargers' head coach. Cammarano has a 49-51 overall record on the gridiron since taking over the job in 2007.

The Chargers saw five key members depart, losing Jack Keenan, Ryan Szatkowski, Nick Mohr, Sal Mistretta and Chris Robel to graduation in June. Szatkowski and Keenan were Spotswood's representatives in the 2017 Snapple Bowl last month.

However, the team has a strong, experienced core group of seniors that will be returning to the lineup this season. That vital nucleus includes Nick Vincelli, Mike Izzo, Michael Leroy, Chance Fee, Shea Obado, Jesse Sowell, Yousef Elhalaka, Ray Bureko and Kyle Dougert. Junior Eddie Rogers is another significant player that is returning to the quarterback and safety positions. Rogers saw some time at quarterback last season, gaining varsity experience. Vincelli is a three-year starter for the Chargers at the running back and strong safety positions.

"We have a nice senior class in terms of numbers and we expect to be competitive," Cammarano said, adding that the strong senior class and the team's committed work ethic would be pluses for the squad this year.

Several seniors are new additions to the team for the fall, including Tom Conahan, JT Schneider, Justin Dalrymple, Alex Hartman. This group along with junior John Lauro were cited as key newcomers by Cammarano.

The Chargers will open up the 2017 football season at home against one of their chief rivals, South River High School. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at the Spotswood High School Football Stadium. The rest of the Chargers 2017 schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, September 16 at home against Holmdel High School; game time at 1 p.m.
