SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood Police Department has made the finals of New Jersey's 101.5's most inspiring #BlueFriday story for 2017 for inducting their youngest officer, Trent Powers, on March 22. Powers, who was two at the time, suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is a rare and incurable disease that typically only affects males. The Spotswood Police Department issued the Helmetta resident badge number 50 along with an official SPD uniform and a big wheel Police Tahoe.

The department routinely includes the youngster in special missions and outings, including the borough's annual Memorial Day Parade and the recent roundup of the Grinch and his gang during the holidays. Spotswood beat out 22 other Blue Friday stories to finish in the top four along with the Jamesburg, Howell and Morris Township Police Departments.

The winner will receive a $5,000 charitable donation to the organization of their choice. Spotswood's officers want to donate the funds to Powers Promise. Powers Promise was set up by Officer Powers' parents, Kim and Trevor Powers, to raise awareness about the disease as well as work to find a cure.

The Howell Police Department made seven-year-old Jake Honig an honorary officer. Honig has been battling brain cancer since he was two. Howell police also gave Officer Honig a special toy motorcycle.

The Jamesburg Police Department started a GoFundMe page to assist the daughter of a fallen officer. The eight-year-old girl was having lunch with her mom in a Helmetta restaurant when she suggested to her mom that the pair pay for the meal of an officer that came into the pizza place to eat. The patrolman later discovered that the girl was the daughter of a Perth Amboy police officer killed in the line of duty in 2008 when she was only seven months old.

Morris Township Police Sergeant Sean O'Hare saved a two-year-old boy from drowning while on vacation in Florida. O'Hare rescued the child from the water and then administered CPR to get the toddler breathing again.

Votes can be cast online on New Jersey 101.5's Twitter feed from now until Friday, January 12. The winning department will be invited on the air later this month to receive their $5000 charitable donation in a special presentation.

The Spotswood Police Department is asking residents to cast their vote for the department's youngest officer via their Facebook page and website.
