ALBANY, NY - The Athletic Department of the Sage Colleges announced the recipients of their annual awards in May. Spotswood native Shea Obado received the 2019-20 Sage Men's Lacrosse Gator of the Year award. Obado was a member of Spotswood High School's Class of 2018. While at Spotswood High School, Obado was a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams. Obado represented Spotswood High School at the high profile NJSIAA Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City. He was tapped as a Winter Athlete of the Year for his play on the mat during his time as a Charger.
Obado is a sophomore at Sage and was a team captain for the 2020 season. As a midfielder, he played in all seven games, earning three goals and seven assists. Currently, he is fifth in Sage's men's lacrosse career record book with 30 points. His 12 career goals has him ranked eighth at the school. Obado is also second in career assists at Sage with 18. He holds the record with 113 career ground balls and is the first player in Gator history to have caused 23 turnovers. His 23 career games is the third most for a Sage men's lacrosse player.
“Shea has shown tremendous growth on and off the field since he has stepped foot in the Capital Region.” said Head men’s lacrosse coach Ryan Lanigan, “He leads by example at Sage and is a terrific student in the classroom. On the field, he shows relentless effort and brings energy and focus every day. He has never had a bad practice or game. Plus he can do it all on the field. He has played offense, defense, man-up, man-down, wings and faceoffs. When Shea finishes his athletic career at Sage, he will undoubtedly be one of the best athletes to ever walk through this program, and we are much better off for having him.”
Obado was a member of the Sage Colleges first-ever men's varsity lacrosse team as a freshman. He earned 20 points his first season, notching nine goals and 11 assists. The business major also had a team-best 95 ground balls his freshman season.
