SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School varsity softball team lost to South River 4-3 on Thursday. Spotswood had a two-run lead after the third inning. South River chipped back with two runs in the fourth while the Chargers added one. The Rams scored both the tying and go-ahead run in the fourth to nail down the victory.
Hannah Kurtz went the distance for South River, giving up three runs on five hits. Kurtz also had one hit and scored a run. Diana Rucinski pitched four innings for the Chargers, allowing four runs on five hits. Maddie Chu pitched the final three innings of the game for Spotswood, giving up one hit and striking out two.
Lauren Schmidt had two RBIs for South River. The Rams also had hits from Haley Joynes and Erin Kowalski. Brittany Rifenburg was 2-for-3 for Spotswood with a double and one RBI. Mikayla Umanzar hit a double for the Chargers. Jen Kane hit a single and Heather Cutler had one RBI.
The team's second loss in a row dropped the team's overall record to 5-9. Spotswood is 4-4 in league play. Spotswood's game on Friday against New Brunswick was canceled due to the weather. The team will travel to Old Bridge High School on Saturday to take on the Knights. First pitch is 11 a.m.
