SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School boys varsity tennis team defeated Metuchen High School on Monday, May 8, 5-0. Derek Miller won his first singles match in straight sets, beating Ethan Longville, (6-3, 6-1) while second singles player John Tobia also defeated his opponent Jacob Dale in straight sets, (6-0, 6-2). It took Josh Mathew three sets to defeat Metuchen's Sean Lu. Lu won the first set, (6-2), but Mathew rallied back to take the next two sets, (7-5, 7-6). Mathew won the third set tie-breaker, (7-5) to seal the overall win for Spotswood.
The first doubles team of Matt Evango and Stephen Gardner defeated Sam Sinclair and Andrew Musselman, (6-3, 6-3) while the second doubles team of Ryan Miller and Mike Kaczmarski needed three sets to defeat Anuar De Santis and Ramik Rizwan. Miller and Kaczmarski won the first set (7-5), but dropped the second set to the Bulldogs, (7-5). Since the match was already clinched by Spotswood, the two teams played a tie-breaker to determine the outcome of the second doubles match. The Chargers prevailed, winning the tie-breaker, (10-5).
The win stopped a two-match skid for the Chargers who lost matches to Middlesex High School, (3-2), and Sayreville High School, (4-1), last week. Their victory over Metuchen improved the Chargers overall record on the season to 7-6.
NJSIAA Tournament pairings were announced yesterday for high school tennis. Spotswood will be taking on Palmyra High School on Friday, May 12. Palmyra is seeded seventh in the Central Jersey Group 1 bracket with a 9-5 overall record while Spotswood is seeded tenth. The winner will take on second seeded Cinnamison High School.
