MIDDLESEX, NJ - A five run fifth inning sparked the Spotswood High School boys varsity baseball team as they defeated fifteenth seeded Middlesex High School in the preliminary round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament on Saturday, May 14.
Down three to nothing in the fifth, the Chargers scored five runs to take the lead from the Blue Jays. Middlesex got one back in the seventh, but Spotswood held onto their one run lead for the victory. Spotswood, the eighteenth seed in the tournament, will now move on to play second seeded East Brunswick High School on Monday, May 16 in the first round. The game will be played at East Brunswick High School.
Matthew Ciaccio pitched 5.2 innings for the Chargers, giving up six hits and three runs. Two runs were earned. Ciaccio also struck out two and walked one. At the plate, Ciaccio was one-for-four and drove in two crucial RBIs. He also scored a run. Chris Auciello came on in relief and pitched 1.1 inning. Auciello struck out two batters and also gave up one hit and one run.
Matt Krause was one-for-three with an RBI. Senior Dan Newton cracked a double and Jake Ryan scored a run and added a much-needed RBI.
Tyler Diamond pitched five innings for the Blue Jays, giving up six hits and five runs. All five runs were earned. Kyle Nepton came on in relief and threw for two innings. Nepton struck out four Charger batters. Diamond was three-for-three at the plate for Middlesex and Jake Hnylycia drove in two RBIs.
The rain date for the May 16 first round game against the Bears in Tuesday, May 17.
