ELIZABETH, NJ – Construction officials and engineers have determined that the steeple area of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church on the corner of Grier Avenue and South Street is unsafe and will need to be removed. Elizabeth Fire Department has established a collapse zone around the area.

A part of the steeple flew off in the strong winds on Sunday, causing the surrounding streets to be blocked off until the situation was determined to be safe.

The church, with its gold, onion-shaped steeple, is a familiar landmark in the city.

Father Ruslan Romanyuk, pastor of the church, discovered the damage early in the morning before Sunday services and called the city inspector, who decided that the steeple needed to be assessed by a structural engineer. While awaiting a decision, Elizabeth police kept traffic diverted as Father Romanyuk and parishioners waited for the engineer to arrive in the nearby parish house.
