A larger-than-life figure of U.S. history, Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) became the youngest President in 1901 after President McKinley’s assassination. He is as well-known for his great political accomplishments, as he is for his colorful personality.  Major aspects of his life as a public figure include his ‘outdoorsman’ image; his “Square Deal” agenda, which emphasized fairness for all citizens; his service with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War; and his measures that led to the creation of several National Parks. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

Peyton Dixon is a professional actor who has been a member of American Historical Theatre since 2001. He has appeared as historic figures in such venues as Independence National Historical Park and the National Archives, as well as in television documentaries.

Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, chair of the County’s Business Development and Education Committee, said: “People have grown to really enjoy these presentations from American Historical Theatre and our Culture and Heritage team. This program offers so much insight on how we’ve become the nation we are today.”

Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios added: “If you’re looking for a way to learn about history that goes beyond looking things up online or in a book, this program offers the feeling of live theater combined with expert historical research. I urge all those interested in history or curious to learn more about our nation’s presidents to attend this event.”

This program is offered free of charge, but registration is required by 4 p.m. on Friday, February 19. Call (732) 745-3030, ext. 310 to register or for directions or information.

To register online, send an email to culturalandheritage@co.middlesex.nj.us. Persons with hearing disabilities may dial (732) 745-3888 (TTY users only) or 711, the New Jersey Relay System. In case of inclement weather, call 732-462-8262.

Wheelchairs are available upon request for visitors who may need assistance from the parking lot to the program.

Funding for “Presidents Day 2016 with Peyton Dixon as President Theodore Roosevelt” is provided in part by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Jersey Historical Commission.
