SPOTSWOOD, NJ - It has been a tale of two very different seasons on the court for the Spotswood High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams. However, as the regular season winds down and state and conference tournament play heats up, both teams will be in on the action.
Preliminary and play-in rounds begin early this week for the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. However, as the eighth seed, the Spotswood High School boys varsity basketball team will wait and watch the outcomes to see who their first round opponent will be. Spotswood along with seven other teams received byes for the preliminary and play-in rounds. The preliminary round begins today for the tournament. All first round games must be played by Thursday, February 18.
With their 8-13 record, the girls varsity basketball team must play a preliminary round match in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. The nineteenth seeded Chargers will take on the fourteenth seeded South Plainfield. Preliminary round matches will be played on Monday, February 15. Spotswood will travel to South Plainfield for the game. South Plainfield's overall record on the season in 8-12 and they are 7-7 in conference play.
As the last seed in the NJSIAA Tournament, the girls varsity basketball team will take on the number one seed in Central Jersey Group Two play . New Providence has a 14-5 overall record and is 6-3 in conference play. The Chargers will travel to New Providence for the March 1 game, which begins at 7 p.m.
Their 19-3 overall record earned the boys varsity basketball team the eighth seed in NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two tournament play. They will take on ninth seeded Delran. Spotswood will have the home court advantage in this 6 p.m. matchup that will take place on March 1 at the Summerhill Road high school.
Delran has a 14-6 overall record on the season, but is only 1-6 in conference play.
