Auctions of special jerseys worn by local drivers are continuing to raise money for various charities.

Between May 18 and 20 at racetracks throughout North America, participating drivers and trainers wore  custom-made replica jerseys of their own colors, with their selected charity logo displayed on the jersey.  The jerseys are being auctioned off with proceeds going to charity.

Jersey for drivers that regularly drive at New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York tracks have already been sold while bidding is still open for others.

Yannick Gingras’s jersey brought $420. He has been racing at The Downs at Pocono and Harrah’s Philadelphia. While wearing his special colors, Gingras won three, placed second three times and had one third. His charity of choice is National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

New Jersey based driver Andy Miller’s jersey fetched $400 for while his wife and trainer, Julie got $200 for Pacing For The Cure.

Joe Betro of Delancey’s Bar and Restaurant in Goshen, N.Y. bid $200 for Jason Bartlett’s Jersey. Bartlett won six, placed second three times and had two thirds at Yonkers on May 19 and 20.

Bartlett’s charity of choice is the Eva Fini Fund. Eva is a young neighbor of the Bartletts who is courageously battling Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome, first identified by Austrian physician Dr. Andreas Rett in 1966, is, according to an informational page, “a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects girls almost exclusively. It is characterized by normal early growth and development followed by a slowing of development, loss of purposeful use of the hands, distinctive hand movements, slowed brain and head growth, problems with walking, seizures, and intellectual disability.”

“Joe is a horse owner with Ed Hart as his trainer and we both know the Fini family very well,” Bartlett said. “He’s committed to the charity and I’m guessing he’s going to hang the colors up in the restaurant.

“I’m just happy to help out.”

Closing on May 29 is the auction for Andy McCarthy’s jersey as well as Matt Kakaley who recently returned to racing after being injured in an accident.

Scott Zeron's auction will close out the fundraiser on June 18.
