STAFFORD - On Saturday, the newly formed Ocean County chapter of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh will be hosting the Ocean County Irish Festival.  It will not be held in Ship Bottom but instead in a new convenient location, the Manahawkin Lake Park in Manahawkin.

Those planning on attending are invited to bring their own chairs and tables if they would like.  Families and groups of friends can set up a section of the park to enjoy the entertainment, vendors, food, beer, wine, children's games etc. all day.

The Shillelagh Club plans on honoring "Big Joe Henry" from NJ 101.5.  Big Joe will be broadcasting live at the event beginning at 10 a.m.  The festival begins at 11 a.m. and runs until 7 p.m.  It promises to be a great time.

Another huge aspect of this years event is that admission is free.  This is the first time the festival has offered free admission.

There will be 50/50 raffles every two hours and a Mega 50-50 and those tickets will be picked at the end of the day.  You don't need to be in attendance at the time of the Mega 50-50 to be a winner. The public will be able to purchase those tickets at the Festival up until the drawing.

The Ocean County Irish Festival is a family event which will include live music, pipe bands, step dancers, kids activities, food trucks, vendors, and a beer tent.  The beer tent will offer the opportunity to purchase American and Irish beers.  The Shillelaghs will also be selling wine by the glass throughout the event.

Some of the entertainment groups lined up include:

  • Ocean County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums
  • The Captain and O'Neill
  • The Eammon Ryan Band
  • The Sons of Wexford
  • Bloody Callan
  • Devrin Academy of Irish Dance
  • Starlight Performing Art of Manahawkin
  • and others....

The Shillelagh's are proud to announce that "Big Joe" Henry of NJ101.5 FM will be broadcasting his radio show live from the event.   The festival will have a number of beer trucks with a nice assortment of Irish and American beers.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
