Winter guard — known as “the sport of the arts” — is a competitive indoor color guard activity in which performers use flags, rifles, sabers and other equipment combined with dance to produce a choreographed show. Teams are judged in various categories, including movement, technique, design analysis, equipment and general effect.

Somerville Winter Guard is the 2012 Scholastic A and 2015 Scholastic Open Class Winter Guard International (WGI) World Champions. It is one of 24 scholastic guards in the world that competes in the World Class — the highest level of scholastic competition — at the WGI World Championships, which takes place annually at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

Their award-winning performance attracted the attention of musician David Byrne, who selected the team to be one of ten to collaborate with indie musicians to create a live music and winter guard show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Toronto’s Air Canada Center, which was featured in the 2017 documentary Contemporary Color.

The Somerville Winter Guard shows are directed by Joe Harris, Jay Drake, Cindy Wong and Amy Sutphen.

The 20-member Scholastic World team includes Michael Berliner (senior captain), Amanda Carrier, Ellie England, Adelina Gallo, Jenny Le, Breanne Malanga, Ashley Balbuena Moreno (junior captain), Kayla Morgan, Alessia Petroni, Cristina Petroni (senior captain), Carri Polansky, Jennifer Rojas, Alexandra Schweid, Colin Sheeley, Katie Updegrove, Emily Urena, Mario Velasquez, Ally Willoughby (junior captain), Morgan Yap (junior captain) and Heather Young.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
