HELMETTA, NJ - Mark the calendars for the borough's annual Helmetta Day. This year's festivities celebrating Helmetta will be held on Saturday, September 21. Helmetta officially became a municipality back in 1888, but the borough's history begins in 1880 when founder George W. Helme brought the land that is now known as Helmetta.
Helme was not a native New Jerseyian. He was born in Pennsylvania and was an attorney in New Orleans as well as a major/general in the Confederate Army. Besides founding Helmetta, Helme is of course most known for building the borough's iconic snuff mill and more than 100 homes for its workers. Helmetta's name though is a combination of its founder's last name and that of his daughter Antioninette whose nickname was Etta.
Helmetta Day celebrations begin at 4 p.m on September 21.
