SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Helmetta native Steven Karczewski was named as Spotswood High School's Student-of-the-Month for February. He is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the current president of the high school's DECA chapter. DECA has been a big part of Karczewski's time as a Charger, which is why his favorite class is Honors College Marketing. The class' teacher is also the award-winning DECA advisor and someone who has made a lasting impression on Karczewski.

"Mrs. Kelly Meagher has taught me so much about business and really pushed me to do my best," Karczewski said. "Her dedication to this program inside the class and out is amazing. In only four years, this program has grown exponentially and become so much more successful. Although I'm naturally a competitive person, she motivated me to win and told me to shoot for the stars. Without her, I think I would still be running around with no clue what I wanted to do with my life."

Karczewski went to the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta as a sophomore as a part of the Leadership Academy. Junior year he qualified for the ICDC with his manual group and went to Orlando. He qualified again this year with a fourth place finish at states, but this year's ICDC in Nashville was canceled because of the coronavirus crisis.

"It saddens me that I won't have one last chance to me an international winner, but I'm so grateful for every opportunity Mrs. Meagher has given me," Karczewski added.

During his four years with DECA, Karczewski placed sixth in regionals his sophomore year as well as taking home a first place finish in regionals and a third place finish in states his junior year.

Karczewski was active in other Spotswood High School organizations besides DECA. He was a part of the Heroes and Cool Kids program, the Environmental Club, the Community Service Club and played percussion for the Honors Wind Ensemble. Karczewski was a member of the Spotswood High School's boys soccer team as well as its winter and spring track teams. He was a Greater Middlesex Conference All-Star track team member for the spring 2019 season and this past winter season.

Like all seniors, Karczewski has a lot of fond memories of his time as a Charger. He is very proud of qualifying for the state finals in hurdles. All of his DECA ICDC trips are filled with great remembrances, and he will always remember taking part in Spirit Week for each of his four years at Spotswood High School.

Karczewski is headed to the Rutgers University Business School in the fall. He plans on majoring in Business Marketing.

"Spotswood High School has offered me plenty of opportunities to see what I wanted to do with my future," Karczewski said. "The teachers, staff and my coaches have always supported and encouraged me to challenge myself and never give up. These were the best years of my life, and while I know that I had so much more to offer, I am so proud of everything I have accomplished."

"For any future Chargers," Karczewski added. "Take everything one step at a time. Live in the moment and appreciate everything that comes your way, and please take advantage of every opportunity to get involved. Enjoy each day because you never know when your late time stepping through the doors of Spotswood High School will be."
