UNION, NJ - Fresh off of winter break, Spotswood DECA headed to Kean University last week to attend the annual regional competition. After a stellar performance, the DECA chapter of Spotswood High School is sending 63 students to the state competition in Atlantic City on March 2 through March 4.

DECA is a co-curricular program that prepares students for college as well as professional careers by combining classroom instruction with real-life interactions involving the community and area businesses as well as competitive events.

The sixty-three Spotswood High School DECA members attending the state competition against other New Jersey High School DECA chapters is the most of any state competition to date for the program.

Since taking over the DECA program four years ago, Spotswood High School Business, Vocational and Technical teacher, Kelly Meagher has taken Spotswood DECA to new heights. In 2019, Spotswood DECA sent 39 students to compete in the International Competition in Orlando, Florida.

"I attribute the success of our program to our students who are passionate about the program," Meagher said following the January competition. "Having six ICDC finalists this past May has really inspired all of our members. They are motivated because they see where their hard work can take them."

"I was lucky to be handed a strong program and have the ability to add my own individuality and unique flair to it," Meagher added. "Since then, the program has nearly doubled in size. I am constantly learning every year along with the students and building upon those experiences."
