HELMETTA, NJ - Spotswood High School senior Miranda Wells is the 2020 recipient of the Mayor Chris Slavicek Scholarship Award. Mayor Slavicek made the announcement for this year's winner via his Facebook page on Sunday. The Mayor Chris Slavicek Scholarship Award is presented to the Spotswood High School senior that embodies the true spirit of community service. Students applied for the scholarship through Spotswood High School's guidance department. Each applicant needed to submit an essay describing what community service means to them.

"Miranda is an active volunteer within her school, church and greater community," Slavicek said. "Her efforts, to name just a few, have helped provide guidance and enrich the lives of youngsters, lend a helping hand to the aging population and participate in a plethora of programs that have added to the betterment of the local and greater community. Her involvement and drive to help others is a distinct and obvious passion."

Despite the coronavirus pandemic and the stay-at-home order put into effect on March 21 by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Wells continued her philanthropic endeavors, making masks for frontline workers from her Spotswood home.
