SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The New York Blood Center will be resuming blood drives in the area in June to address the urgent need for donors.
The NY Blood Center has been collecting plasma for Co-Vid patients," explained Ny Blood Center Account Manager Lynne Ross. "Our collection has helped over 10,000 patients with the virus. Over the same period of time we were only collecting blood in our own facilities for the safety of both staff and donors. With the reduction in the number of surgeries and accidents, this was adequate. We are starting up our community blood drives at this point to meet the other needs of hospitals."
"The situation is urgent at this time because the usual spring build-up of the blood supply did not happen," Ross continued. "The is currently a blood shortage and donors are needed now."
The Spotswood VFW will host a blood drive on Monday, June 1 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Unlike in blood drives prior to the coronavirus pandemic, walk-ins are discouraged. Donors are strongly encouraged to make an appointment. Walk-ins will only be accommodated if proper social distancing can be maintained. Each donor will have his or her temperature taken before giving blood. All donors are required to wear a face covering.
Donors should be between the ages of 17 and 75 and be in good physical health. A donor can be 16 years of age, but must have a parental consent form. Individuals 76 years of age and older can donate with a doctor's note. All donors should bring identification with a signature or a photo that includes a date of birth. Individuals with a donor card should bring the card.
The donation process takes about sixty minutes. Donors should hydrate well the day before they are scheduled to give blood. It's helpful to snack on salty snacks the evening before as well as get a good night's sleep prior to donating. Eating a well-balanced breakfast the morning of the donation is recommended. Donors should also bring a bottle of water along and drink right before donating.
Appointments for the June 1 drive can be made online using the sponsor code 13807 or by telephoning 800-933-2566. The Spotswood VFW is located at 33 Daniel Road.
For May and June, we are starting with blood drives in very large spaces to enable social distancing. We are also asking donors to wear masks and make appointments to help control the number of donors in the space at one time. Walk-ins are discouraged and will only be accepted if the flow allows and social distancing can be maintained.
