EDISION, NJ - Middlesex County's Edison coronavirus testing site will be utilizing the recently FDA-approved saliva test designed by Rutgers' RUCDR Infinite Biologics, RWJBarnabas Health and Accurate Diagnostic Labs. Unlike other tests that use a nasal swab, the newly designed test is collected by a spit and seal method. In addition to reducing the exposure to healthcare personnel collecting the sample, the saliva test delivers results in 24-48 hours while being non-invasive and pain-free to the patient.
Middlesex County is the first in the Garden State to put the coronavirus saliva test into practice. It will be used at the drive-thru coronavirus testing facility at the Kilmer Vehicle Inspection/ Driving Testing Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This testing site is for Middlesex County residents only. Residents needing to be tested must make an appointment prior to coming to the test center. In order to make an online appointment, residents must have a valid prescription from a doctor or be exhibiting the following coronavirus symptoms:
- A fever of 100.4 or higher for adults of children or a fever of 99.6 in adults 65 years of age of older
- Respiratory symptoms and/or shortness of breath
Patients should not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum 30 minutes before providing a saliva sample. A coronavirus saliva test will not be given to patients who do not follow the guidelines for the coronavirus saliva test.
When arriving for the scheduled appointment, a patient must bring the printout confirmation in addition to proof of residency. If multiple people are being tested, each person must bring his or her confirmation printout. Proof of residency can include a valid driver's license, state-issued identification or two pieces of mail such as a bank statement or utility bill.
If a patient does not show up for a scheduled appointment or cancels, another appointment cannot be booked. The testing site webpage strongly urges residents to only reserve an appointment if they are able to attend at the scheduled time.
Middlesex County is operating an additional testing site in South Brunswick at the Motor Vehicle Inspection Station in Dayton. However, only the Edison testing site is using the saliva test. Residents making an appointment for the South Brunswick testing site will be give the coronavirus test via a nasal swab.
The Kilmer testing site is located at 33 Kilmer Road in Edison. Appointments can be made online for both Middlesex County testing sites. According to the Middlesex County scheduling webpage, all appointments for Wednesday, April 15 are booked. Residents interested in making an appointment for Friday, April 17 can begin doing so at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 16.
