EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - East Brunswick and surrounding communities will mark the tragic passing of township teen Yousef Khela on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. at the Municipal Pond. Khela died on Wednesday when he fell through the ice at the pond on Civic Center Drive in front of the township's library. Two friends also fell through the ice, but were able to get themselves out. First responders formed a human chain to help pull Khela from the icy waters.
Parking for tonight's vigil is available at the East Brunswick Library and municipal lots. Overflow parking is available across the street at the Calvary Korean Church on Ryders Lane. East Brunswick Police Department officers will be on hand to help with crossing, but pedestrians are advised by the EBPD to use the crosswalk between Ryders Lane and Civic Center Drive.
Khela, a student at the Churchill Junior High School, was 13 years old. He was laid to rest of Friday following a funeral service at the St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church in East Brunswick.
