New Brunswick Opens Cooling Centers As Temperatures Approach Record Highs

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - On a day when forecasters are predicting temperatures in the mid-90s and a heat index even higher, the city has opened two cooling centers for people to escape the heat.

The New Brunswick Free Public Library at 60 Livingston Ave., and the New Brunswick Senior Citizen Resource Center at 812 Huntington St., have been designated as cooling centers, city officials announced today.

The Senior Center will be open until 4 p.m. and the library will be open until 9 p.m.

“Anyone without sufficient relief from the heat is encouraged to visit these location,” officials said in a statement issued this morning.

The National Weather Service predicts the temperature will reach 95, and the heat index will make it feel closer to 100.

A heat advisory was issued until 8 p.m. today.

In advance of the rising temperatures, school officials over the weekend announced that students at Roosevelt, Livingston and Lincoln elementary schools would be dismissed early today, with classes ending at 1:40 p.m.

Several other municipalities, including Edison, have also scheduled shortened school days.
