HELMETTA, NJ - Ed Schapley is better known as Officer Ed to Spotswood School District students. He is the Spotswood School District's Resource Officer and works with students through the DARE and LEAD programs in addition to being the district's safety officer. Schapley has been an officer with the Spotswood Police Department for the past 25 years. The SPD sergeant is Thursday's Helmetta Hometown Hero.

The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent closure of the Spotswood School District schools has not changed Schapley's dedication to the students. He remains committed to his daily duties and continues to serve the Spotswood and Helmetta communities with pride. The heightened anxiety and stress of these unprecedented times have not changed his cheerful and compassionate personality.

Schapley is a big New Jersey Devils fan. Outside of work, he loves sports. He plays baseball in an adult league and goalie for a men's league ice hockey team. Schapley enjoys going to the gym. Whenever he can, he heads into the city to catch a play or explore a museum.
