SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Chris Moran scored three minutes into the second overtime period to give the Spotswood High School boys varsity soccer team a 3-2 victory over tenth seeded South River High School in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two Tournament. The win moves the seventh seeded Chargers into the quarterfinal round on Friday against second seeded Delaware Valley High School.
The rivalry between the Rams and Chargers is a hot one, dating back to when Spotswood students used to attend South River High School prior to the opening of Spotswood High School. Tuesday's game was moved to the football stadium to accommodate the fans who come out to support both schools whenever the two teams hit the soccer field. Spotswood has won all three games against the Rams this season.
The two teams were tied 1-1 at the half and then 2-2 after regulation time. Moran scored his second goal of the game following the first scoreless overtime period. Yanni Hatzistefanis netted the other goal for Spotswood and had a three point afternoon, assisting on both of Moran's goals. Tim Smith also earned an assist in the win. Andrew Bishara had 13 saves and his counterpart Anthony Faccin made eight. Alex Correia and Walter Morales scored the goals for the Rams. Anthony Pereria notched an assist for South River.
Spotswood faces off against Delaware Valley at 2 p.m. at Delaware Valley Regional High School in Frenchtown on November 1. Del Valley knocked off 15th seeded Roselle 6-1 on Monday. The Terriers are 16-4 and defeated Spotswood in last year's meeting 5-0.
