SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Kirti Craig and Sofia Vieira both netted goals to help propel the Spotswood High School girls varsity soccer team past Middlesex High School in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group One Girls Soccer Tournament on Monday. Fourth seeded Spotswood defeated 13th seeded Middlesex 2-0. Julia Masucci made one save to earn her 11th shutout of the season. Mandee Mendez notched as assist in the victory. Mia Galati made 11 saves for the Blue Jays.

Spotswood moves on to the next round to face 12th seeded Point Pleasant Beach High School. Point Pleasant knocked off fifth seeded Riverside High School and will be a tough opponent for the Chargers. The Gulls defeated Riverside 7-0 to move into the next round and took Spotswood out of NJSIAA tourney play last fall with a 4-1 win. Point Pleasant has an overall record of 10-7 while the Chargers are 14-3-2.

The two teams face off on Halloween, weather permitting. Game time was not available at press time. The Spotswood High School boys varsity soccer team's 2 p.m. state matchup with rival South River High School today has been moved to the Spotswood High School Stadium to accommodate more fans. Game time is 2 p.m.
