TOMS RIVER, NJ -- What a difference a couple of days make! Milltown staved off elimination in the 12U Section 3 Little League Tournament Monday night with a 5-2 victory over Two Rivers Little league (Rumson-Fair Haven).
Milltown had lost on Saturday to North Howell in the first game of the tournament, showing little energy and clearly having a letdown after their stirring victory against Sayreville to advance to the district tournament. That made Monday's matchup against Two Rivers a must-win for Milltown in the double-elimination format.
Winning pitcher Carter Cumiskey hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a two-run single for Milltown later, and on the mound, allowed two runs on three hits, walked three and struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Trey Lazar came on in the sixth and got the last two outs on strikeouts with the tying run at the plate to earn the save. Ronaldy Peralta had the other RBI for Milltown on a sacrifice fly, as well as playing stellar second base in his first ever start at the position
Milltown will play Tuesday night against Bordentown. The winner of that game will play Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. If necessary, there could also be a game Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
