SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity tennis team came away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory in the Chargers' first match of the season. Gabriela Zeron lost her first singles match to Carteret's Manjot Kaur, (6-1, 6-3), while Karen Mausser defeated Cristina Gavarrete in straight sets, (6-1, 6-2), to win her first varsity second singles match. Axelle Lemiere won a tough three set third singles match against Harman Kaur, (6-2, 2-6, 7-6), to help give Spotswood a 2-1 edge in match points. Lemiere won the third set tie-breaker, 7-4, for her first varsity singles win.
After Carteret's Daniela Rivera and Aniyah Smith defeated Chloe Donelan and Lindsey Michaels in their first doubles match, (6-3, 6-0), the second doubles game would decide the overall match winner. The freshmen pair on Angelina Moschella and Melody Dzergoski earned their first varsity win as well, defeating Carteret's Kaur Sukhmani and Ashley Mendoza Tarazona, (6-4, 6-2) to clinch the match victory for the Chargers.
Spotswood is scheduled to travel to Colonia Park today to take on Bound Brook High School in their second match of the 2019 season. Matches begin at 4 p.m., weather permitting.
