DUNELLEN, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity basketball team lost to Dunellen High School 41-36 on Monday. Spotswood took a 20-17 lead into the halftime break and kept pace with the Destroyers in the third quarter with both teams putting up 10 points. However, Dunellen took control of the floor in the final quarter outscoring the Chargers 14-6 to earn the win.
Dunellen's Salma Abouelkheir netted 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double. Chloe Cassidy was the game's top scorer, dropping 14 for the Destroyers. Allison Clarke was Spotswood's hot hand with eight. Gianna Perez, Maddie Hellerich and Jessica Addesso all scored six points for the Chargers while Kirti Craig added four. Julia Masucci chipped in three. Ava Hellerich scored two and Giana Oelkers one.
The loss drops the Chargers' overall season record to 4-3. Spotswood will look to get back on track after two straight losses on Wednesday when the Chargers host South River High School at the Spotswood High School Gymnasium. The Rams won both meetings between the two teams last season. South River is 6-2 so far for the 2019-20 season. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m.
